How to Build a Roof over an Existing Deck

You may be thinking, “Why would I want to put a roof over my deck?”

There are many reasons. A roof can help keep you and your guests dry in the event of rain or snow. It could also provide additional shade for those hot summer days and add privacy with its natural screening effect.

If you’re thinking of how to build a roof over an existing deck, then you came to the right place. We’ll discuss how to build a deck with a roof and other related queries.

How to Put a Roof over a Deck: The Easy Building Process

If you are seeking to learn how to build a deck with a roof, there are many different approaches. These steps and procedures should help you have a successful roofing project.

Step1: Find out What the Law in Your Locality States

While most states will allow you to put a roof over an existing deck, it’s best to check with your local city or county building department before starting the project. If you have any questions regarding how to build a roof over an existing deck, call your local government office and ask them for assistance on what permits are needed.

You don’t want to stop an expensive project mid-way when you find out that you didn’t get the proper permits for it.

Step 2: Install Post Base Connectors

After you’ve done your homework and received the proper permits, it’s time to start building a roof over an existing deck. The first step in this project is installing post-base connectors on all of the support beams for the deck. This will allow you to easily attach rafters as well as purlins once you install them later.

Step 3: Install the Rafters

Now that you have post connectors installed, it’s time to install your rafters.

The easiest way to do this is by using a chalk line. First, measure off of each side of the deck about eight feet and snap a chalk line on both sides.

Then simply situate one end of the rafters on a chalk line and snap a second one.

Step 4: Install Ledger Board to Support the Rafters

Now that you have your rafters in place, it’s time to install the ledger board. This will serve as a support beam for all of the weight on your roof, so make sure they are nice and sturdy.

You’ll want to cut one end of them at a 45-degree angle, so when you drill through them into the post connectors, they will stay in place. Now, you’ll be able to put the rest of your rafters on top of these ledgers and secure them with screws or nails into place.

Step 5: Prepare and Install the Decking Boards

Now that the rafters are snapped into place, you need to go back and prepare your decking boards. To do this, snap a third chalk line eight feet up from the ground (this is where your roof will be) down each side of the post connectors. This way, when you install these boards, they’ll overhang by eight feet.

Once the decking boards are ready for installation, you can lay them out on the ground and then lift your post connector from where they’re hanging. You’ll set these boards in between two rafters, so there’s no need to attach them with screws; place it down!

Step 6: Add Any Finishing Touches to the Roof Framing

The next step is to add any finishing touches before you add the roofing materials. If you want a gutter system on your roof, this is the best time to install that. Also, consider adding insulation and a vapor barrier (depending on your climate).

Step 7: It’s Time to Install the Roofing Material

Now that the roof framing is done, you can move on to installing the actual roofing. Your specific instructions for this stage will vary depending on:

  • The material you choose to use
  • How steep your angle is and,
  • Whether or not there are overhangs involved.

Regardless of the specifics, though, there are a few general rules to follow for this stage.

Start by removing any footings that will be covered up. Then you’ll need to install some waterproofing (tar paper or another layer of shingles) before installing your actual roof material.

Next, lay down felt paper to protect the roofing material from moisture.

Make sure to keep your work area well ventilated, especially if you’re working with wood shakes or shingles — both of which are flammable materials.

Finally, finish up by nailing down any loose edges and replacing footings that were removed earlier.

Step 8: The Final Touches

Once you’re done installing the roofing material, you’ll need to care for the doors and windows installed into your deck. These can be tricky because you’ll still want them to open, but they will have a new function as well – namely keeping water out.

The best solution is usually using windows/doors with hinges on the top, so it’s easy to get in there when necessary while also ensuring it’s fully sealed when closed.

You can also consider installing rubber flaps on the inside of your windows and doors, which will act as a permanent seal for these areas (although you’ll still want to clean out any debris that accumulates).

Once all of this is done, make sure you waterproof everything with a good layer of sealant. You can also style your roof deck as you please to meet your taste.
